The Restoration of Jacopo Tintoretto's Crucifixion in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco

Go behind the scenes of Save Venice’s ambitious campaign to conserve Jacopo Tintoretto’s monumental Crucifixion in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, one of the most compelling and dramatic masterpieces of Renaissance art. This documentary offers rare access to the conservation process, revealing the complexity and significance of the intervention—from scientific analysis to surface cleaning and pictorial reintegration—while also exploring the painting’s material history and the exceptional challenges posed by its location, scale, and technique.

The film follows the conservation treatment carried out between March 2023 and March 2025 by the conservators of CBC, made possible through the generous support of Arnold M. Bernstein. Directed by Ginko Film and featuring photography by Matteo De Fina, the documentary captures the precision, expertise, and dedication of the conservation team, while underscoring the essential role of Save Venice in safeguarding the city’s unparalleled artistic heritage for future generations.
